The movie isn't even that bad, either, but I could imagine that if the blocking was improved, this film might have actually been pretty good. It's too sloppy, the single element that makes Waterworld feel like the overblown disaster people claim it is. Even when there's little happening on-screen, the entire thing feels too vast for its own good I don't get a sense of what the movie wants me to feel because the camera isn't pinpointing onto what matters the most in a scene. It's even more troublesome with the action scenes, POV shots of arrows firing and people soaring in, because it all feels too messy for its own good.ДЄside from maybe the final showdown, which is certainly better in pulling off its intense action thrills, the entire movie has this problem. I don't feel the peril nearly as much as Costner as he's stuck in his cage the production has too much on-screen in its massive design for me to properly focus on him struggling to break open his cage. Because as spectacular as the stunts and effects are, the camerawork is constantly undermining the thrill. Sounds like a lot of fun, but there's far too little thrill to be had in watching it. The sequence is filled with so many different things happening-an escaping hot air balloon, a horde of jetskis, a seaplane with people skiing over the city border via ramps, fire arrows, Kevin Costner trying to escape his treacherous execution in the process. It's hard to tell where the problem is most obvious-probably in the initial sequence where the city gets raided by the lead antagonist (Dennis Hopper, delicious in this film) and his crew.

Then again, if Kevin Reynolds is as lousy of a director as I've heard, I shouldn't be too surprised by this movie not living up to its full potential. Waterworld being the most expensive movie ever made definitely makes sense when you look at its production and grand action scenes from a vague standpoint, but actually watching the film it feels so much cheaper than it should be. Which is a problem, considering how much of this film is about spectacle. Yet while I could argue that Kevin Costner may have been a weak leading man, and while I could especially point out where the editing is faulty (seriously, what even is that scene where Costner fights the shark?), nothing in the film stood out to me more than the camerawork and how it undermines the grand scale of the film. While I didn't hate the film the way the tabloids of the time expected me to-the concept is legitimately interesting, and there's plenty of fun to be had with its production design and whatever worldbuilding ideas it throws our way nice pacing, too-it did have a good deal of problems that made me sympathise with those that called it the worst possible result of a blockbuster gone wrong.
